Off today on my trip. I'll have the computer with me, and will try to post as I can, provided time and Interweb access cooperate with me.
I spent yesterday afternoon getting things ready. Got the car washed and waxed and vacuumed and the windows Rain-X-ed and so forth, and I don't believe my car's been this clean in ages. Almost a shame to have to take it out and drive the thing. Oh, and while I'm talking about it, I have to put in a completely gratuitous plug for something called "Wax As U Dry," made by Eagle One. It's a spray-on car wax that's applied as you towel-dry the car, and the motion of the towel rubs the wax into the finish. The last few times I've waxed the car, it's been with paste wax, which, though effective, has been a nightmare that's worn my arms out and and left little white pieces of dried wax all over creation. But with this spray-on wax, I had the car dried and waxed in half an hour. It's one of those "man, I wish I'd thought of that first" ideas.
Anyhow, wish me luck on the trip. I'll post as events will let me.
(Update, 6:35 p.m.: Got in safely, and am unwinding from the long, long road trip. Watching an episode of Law & Order while I'm waiting for a call from a friend who's going to dinner with me. It's one of the Claire Kincaid episodes, which is especially blissful; she was by far my favorite of Ben Stone's/Jack McCoy's assistants. [Though I must admit minor crush on Linus Roache in the new episodes.] Anyhow, more to follow in a couple days...and I believe you'll find the reason I'm here to be of interest. Yes, I'm being mysterious and I'm enjoying it....)
:: Where have you gone, Harvey Korman? As if it wasn't bad enough to lose Sydney Pollack, Earle Hagen and Dick Martin in the last few days, now we've lost Harvey Korman. I always loved his characterizations of prim, wired-a-bit-too-tight, diabolical types, such as the one and only Hedley Lamarr from Blazing Saddles. And since The Carol Burnett Show was required weekly viewing in our household when I was a kid (and I can thank my parents for having excellent taste in viewing and in comedy), there was no shortage of occasions when I got to see Harvey Korman and Tim Conway play off one another.
